Unemployment benefits
In Denmark, you have the option to take out unemployment insurance to protect yourself.
Unlike in some countries, Denmark doesn’t have mandatory unemployment insurance. For that reason, it's a good idea to register with an unemployment fund (A-kasse), often managed by trade unions like 3F, to ensure you're covered.
How much does it cost? As a full-time member of the unemployment fund of 3FA, the price is DKK 552 (2025) per month

In addition, there is the membership fee for the trade union of about DKK 1.046 (2025) per month.
You can deduct the membership fee for the trade union and the unemployment fund within the Danish tax system (Skat).
Your right to unemployment benefits

To qualify for unemployment benefits and support from the unemployment fund, there are a few conditions you’ll need to meet:

  • Be a member of the unemployment fund for at least one year.
  • Fulfil an income requirement of DKK 273.504 (2025). Only income in membership periods can be used in the calculation and you can include a maximum of DKK 22.792 (2025) per month.
The income requirement can be fulfilled on the basis of A or B-income from which labour market contributions have been paid, including salary or profit from self-employed activities.
  • You can document that your employment has been on the pay and working conditions usually applicable in Denmark.
  • You can document that your pay corresponds to the pay in Danish collective agreements.
  • Your income must have been registered with the Income Register of Skat.

If your pay is much lower than the collective agreement’s standard, it could affect your right to unemployment benefits. Contact your local 3F branch to get more details and avoid misunderstandings.

Contact your local branch

To obtain unemployment benefits in Denmark, you must:

  • Live in Denmark.
  • Be registered with the job centre.
  • Seek employment.
  • Be available to the Danish labour market on equal terms with the Danes.

You are always welcome to contact the local 3F trade union to check if your pay and employment conditions live up to the collective agreement requirements.

Transferring benefits from another country

If you’ve worked in another EU/EEA country or Switzerland, your insurance and employment periods may be transferred to Denmark. You just need to meet these requirements:

  • Be employed and register within eight weeks of ending your insurance in the other country.
  • Work 296 hours within the first 12 weeks/three months of arriving in Denmark (148 hours for part-time insured).
  • Make sure your income in the other country was taxed and met the standard pay for that country.
  • Submit payslips or other documents to prove your working hours and income abroad.

If you’ve been a member of a Danish unemployment fund within the last five years, you won’t need to meet the work requirement.

You must have one year of uninterrupted membership. You can include the insurance period from your country of origin if you meet the above conditions.
